Cairns Museums

(Cairns, Far North Queensland - QLD, Australia)

Cairns Historical Society Museum photographA handful of museums present themselves to those visiting Cairns, containing interesting displays and information about life in the Far North. The Cairns Historical Society Museum is amongst the most notable and was founded in the late 1950s to preserve local history, housing an interesting collection of Aboriginal artefacts.

The Cairns Museum features a popular gift shop, where you can purchase souvenirs with a distinctive local flavour, such as history books, Aboriginal art works, photographs and city postcards.

Other cultural highlights include the traditional Cominos House on Greenslopes Street and the Ben Cropp Shipwreck Museum at the Pier Marketplace. Families in Cairns may like to pay a visit to the Doll and Bear Museum on Mayers Street, in the city's inner suburb of Manunda, while nearby, the outlying communities of Gordonvale and Yarrabah are also home to some interesting museums of their own.
