Getting Around, Agra Travel, Transport and Car Rental
(Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India)
Agra is a busy city and extremely popular tourist destination, featuring a good choice of public transportation.
Many tourists travel here using long-haul bus transport from nearby Delhi
, while others arrive by train, at the city's prominent Agra Cantonment Train Station, or fly into the nearby Kheria Airport.
Apart from local bus transport, inner-city travel comes in the form of taxis and three-wheeler rickshaws. For many, the most centrally located parts of Agra are best reached by foot, since traffic can become heavy.

Also known as Agra Airport, Kheria Airport
is located approximately 7 km / 4 miles from the city centre and is a notable stop along the Delhi / Agra / Khajuraho and Varanasi
route, which is operated by Indian Airlines. This is a fairly small domestic airport and schedule services are infrequent, with the main flights usually operating on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Train transport is a convenient way to travel both to and from the city, with the Agra Cantonment Train Station being the main railway station, off Station Road. Located on the south-western side of the Agra Fort and the famous Taj Mahal
, the Cantonment station (Cantt) is a prominent stop along the Delhi to Mumbai
line. Many trains regularly travel to cities around India
, with the main destinations including Delhi (around three hours), and Jaipur
(four hours). Look out for the modern, super-fast Bhopal Shatabdi (Shatabdi Express), the fastest train in the whole of India.
Those choosing to rent a car in Agra will enjoy the freedom that it provides, but do avoid driving within the city centre if possible, since it often becomes congested. Rental car transport is perfect for those planning to travel outside of the city and around Uttar Pradesh, and it is possible to drive to Delhi along the National Highway 2, although you should always allow plenty of time, since traffic can often be extremely heavy. Other popular destinations, which can be reached by car from Agra include Gwalior (two hours / National Highway 3), Kanpur (five hours / National Highway 2) and Lucknow (six and a half hours / National Highway 2). Cars can also be hired with their own personal driver, who will be happy to transport you to many locations around Agra.
Taxis and Auto Rickshaws
Nippy auto rickshaws are an extremely popular way to travel around Agra, particularly when traffic conditions are congested, although always agree fairs in advance. Those who are aware of the environment will be pleased to also find cycle-powered rickshaw transport, which gather in prominent tourist hot spots and are perfect for short distances, being particularly cheap. A pre-paid taxi rank and auto rickshaw booth can both be found outside of the Agra Cantonment Train Station and are happy to provide guided tours of the city.
