Qingdao Protestant Church

Constructed in 1910, the Qingdao Protestant Church is located adjacent to the Xinhaoshan Park and offers many distinctive features, such as an 18-metre / 60-foot high main hall and a 39-metre / 128-foot high bell tower. The architecture is typically Protestant, featuring clay red tiles and sandy yellow walls, and despite some recent renovations, the structure retains much of its original charm and character.

Jiaozhou Governor's Hall

This former government building in Qingdao was built between 1904 and 1906 and owes its design to the German architect Mahlke. Jiaozhou Governor's Hall has been occupied by various parties over the years, including the Japanese and the People's Republic of China. Covering a total space of 7,500 square metres, the hall was built originally to serve as the Jiaozhou Bay governor's office building.

Qingdao Catholic Church

The city's German colonial period is evident in the splendid structure that is Qingdao Catholic Church. Dating back to 1931, this church is dominated by its two magnificent 60-metre / 197-foot high spires. Visitors can appreciate the fine architecture from the outside, before venturing inside to view the church's ornately decorated interior. The church is still a working religious facility so visitors need to make sure that services are not in progress before entering, and always show the appropriate reverence when they do so.

Zhangqiao Pier

Situated at the tip of Qingdao Bay and off Zhongshan Road is the Zhangqiao Pier, a 440-metre / 1,445-foot long structure that was built in 1891 and part of the city's first ever wharf. At the sea end of the pier is a pavilion known as the Billow Returning Tower. The pier is open daily, and whilst it offers nothing particularly special, this local landmark has an important place in the city's history.

Zhanshan Temple

This Buddhist temple in Qingdao is situated on the southern side of the Zhansan, a word that translates literally as 'deep mountain'. The temple faces the sea and is comprised of a number of buildings, of which the large Yaoshi stupa is the most famous. A Buddhist scripture library is also available for viewing.
