Aerial imageThere are a number of ways that visitors can travel in and around Pretoria.

Public transport is available, although it is rather limited. Car hire and taxis remain popular options.

Visitors can also choose to get around on foot if they are just visiting the major attractions within Pretoria city centre.

Car Rental

Cars are widely available for hire in Pretoria and are a useful way of travelling around the city if you plan to stay for any length of time. A car is also essential if you would like to visit areas outside the city not served by public transport.

A national road network connects Pretoria to Johannesburg, as well as to most other major cities in South Africa.

Buses and Coaches

The bus service in Pretoria is rather limited, but can be useful if you're staying out in the suburbs. Buses run from Church Square in the centre of Pretoria. Timetables are available at the bus terminal in Church Square and in shops that sell bus tickets.

Long-distance bus and coach transport links Pretoria with South Africa's major cities, including both Johannesburg and Durban.

Trains

A train service operates in Pretoria, but is not of great use for visitors to the city as it does not stop near major landmarks. The train station is in the south of the city. Trains transport is, however, a good way to travel long distances, between major cities, with intercity trains going to Johannesburg, Polokwane, Musina and nearby Mozambique.

Taxis

Travel by taxi is a useful option when you don't have a car and when no bus service is available.

However, it can be expensive. A more cost effective, if not so comfortable, way of getting around Pretoria is to use a minibus taxi.
