Central District photo, showing Church SquarePretoria is a fairly compact city and is laid out in a grid pattern. It is therefore relatively easy for visitors to find their way around the streets, locations and various layouts.

The neighbourhoods of Pretoria are home to an abundance of historic landmarks, as well as museums and galleries.


Pretoria also has some very well-to-do and long-established suburban neighbourhoods, which are well worth visiting.

Central District

Traditionally the Central District lay at the heart of commerce in Pretoria. However, in recent years, many businesses have chosen to relocate to the city's suburbs. Nonetheless, this neighbourhood remains popular with visitors and centres on the popular landmark, Church Square. The Central District is also the location of many of Pretoria's best museums and galleries.

Arcadia District

Pretoria's Union Buildings are located in this neighbourhood, as are some of the city's most historic buildings. The Arcadia District is also home to most of Pretoria's embassies, of which there are a considerable number. As you'd expect, there is no shortage of upmarket hotels and restaurants, as well as fashionable shops and shopping centres.

Hatfield District

Hatfield is a lively suburb in Pretoria, and the popular haunt of students and embassy staff. As well as numerous restaurants, this neighbourhood has plenty of entertainment facilities and shops.

Sunnyside District

Just a short drive from the centre of Pretoria and a quick walk from the University of Pretoria, the suburb of Sunnyside has become a popular place to stay and live. As well as being close to most of the major tourist attractions and museums, this neighbourhood is handily placed for the lively Hatfield district.

Brooklyn District

Located to the east of the city centre, Brooklyn is a well-established and rather upmarket neighbourhood. Its proximity to the vast Brooklyn Mall makes it a popular place to visit. Visitors can also savour the delights of Brooklyn's chic shops, restaurants and cafes, as well as its delightful architecture.

Waterkloof District

Waterkloof is a well-to-do residential suburb of Pretoria and home to the Pretoria Country Club. Its houses are mostly in the English colonial style and its streets are lined with Jacaranda trees. In full bloom, they are a beautiful sight. From Waterkloof, it is possible to get a good view of the cityscape. The neighbourhood of Waterkloof also has some great restaurants.

Menlo Park District

This eastern suburb of Pretoria is home to some of the city's more upmarket residential areas. Located close to the city centre, the motorway and shopping centres, it's little wonder that Menlo Park has become a popular neighbourhood in which to stay. Restaurants, cafes and a good nightlife also add to the charms of one of Pretoria's most vibrant communities.
