Tanzania Capital City, About Dodoma Tourism and Travel

(Tanzania, TZ, East Africa)

Picture of shoppers in DodomaThe capital of Tanzania since 1973, the city of Dodoma gained this status after replacing the previous capital Dar es Salaam. Slowly a number of the governmental and political offices moved here, including the National Assembly of Tanzania in the mid-1990s.

Even though Dodoma now functions as the capital, considerably larger Dar es Salaam remains home to many of the government's offices and ministries - and all of the embassies. Dodoma is especially busy in June, when the government of Tanzania is in session.

Tourism and General Information

When it comes to tourism in Dodoma, there are only a handful of worthy options. These include a hiking trail to the Lion Rock, on the northern side of the city, and various organised excursions. Visitors may also like to check out the centrally located Ismaili Mosque and the Bunge Parliament buildings, which have been built to withstand possible earthquake damage.

Getting around Dodoma is straightforward, with a modern transportation infrastructure being in place. There are plenty of minibuses to hand, known locally as 'dala dala', and taxis are never far away for short journeys. The city's three bus stations are named the Jamatini, Parliament and Saba Saba stations. If you wish to travel further afield, you will be pleased to find that Dodoma is conveniently located on the busy Central Railway Line, connecting onward destinations such as Dar es Salaam, Kigoma and Mwanza.
