Olympia Vineyards and Wineries

Many people are surprised to learn that Olympia and its surrounding region has earned itself quite a reputation for its extremely productive and successful hand-crafted winemaking industry.

A number of vineyards grow their grapes around the valleys of Columbia and Yakima, and these are used to ultimately ferment rich-bodied Mediterranean-style wines, carefully blended and matured in oak barrels.

Washington's regional vineyards and wineries have often been established for several decades and usually come with tasting rooms, where you can sample the produce before making a purchase. At the Madsen Family Cellars, the acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon is something of a specialty, while the Columbia Valley Merlot at the Northwest Mountain Winery has enjoyed much success at the Seattle Wine Awards.

No less than seven award-winning wineries are connected by the self-guided South Sound Wine Trail (listed below - tel: +1 877 704 7500), which begins at Lacey and winds its way through Olympia, before reaching Shelton. Those with a car will find that the route is easy to follow and includes both Highway US-101 and Interstate I-5. Along the route, many choose to stop off for a stroll around the expansive Capitol Lake, or perhaps visit one of the nearby state parks.
