Washington's state capital and Thurston County's seat, the city of Olympia comes with a relatively humble population of roughly 50,000 residents. This actually makes the state capital currently just the 25th-largest city in the state of Washington, with the metropolis of Seattle proudly sitting at the number one spot in terms of overall populous.

Water has long played an integral part in the shaping of Olympia and has given the capital much of its character, with the city being situated on the Budd Inlet, on the far southerly side of the Puget Sound. Large portions of the downtown district actually sit upon land reclaimed from the water many years ago.
