Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Less than a one-hour drive from Virginia Beach lies Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, one of the most important wilderness reserves on the Atlantic coast. The refuge supports a wide variety of migratory birds and other wildlife attractions. Species of note include American bald eagles and loggerhead turtles.

First Landing State Park

This state park in Virginia Beach protects the site of the first landing of Europeans on the United States coast. In 1607 the first British settlers arrived at this spot, which has been designated as a National Natural Landmark. The state park features 19 miles / 30 km of trails that are perfect for hiking, jogging and cycling, and there is a boat ramp and picnic areas. The park also houses the informative Chesapeake Bay Center, which has area information, as well as some interesting exhibits on local marine life and history.

The Old Coast Guard Station

A unique and interesting attraction, the Old Coast Guard Station proudly documents its important role in protecting the waters off the Virginia coast. Displays include rescue and shipwreck accounts, and there are plenty of attractions on exhibit that have been recovered from famous shipwrecks. The station has a great shop selling all kinds of unique souvenirs, replicas and memorabilia.
Open hours: Monday to Saturday - 10:00 to 17:00, Sunday - 12:00 to 17:00
