Once belonging to the neighboring state of Washington and now very much a part of Virginia, the city of Arlington stands next to the Potomac River. The characterful, historical neighborhoods of the city have been restored to their former glory and provide plenty of distractions for sightseeing tourists, who will also likely unearth some appealing restaurants and nightspots during their explorations.

A major draw in the city is the Arlington National Cemetery, which contains the graves of some 300,000 soldiers and people with military backgrounds. The cemetery is spread over more than 240 hectares / 600 acres and its poignant memorials are best visited as part of an organized coach tour. For something quite different to military graves, the recently opened Artisphere (located within comfortable walking distance of the Rosslyn metro station) provides plenty for all the family to enjoy, including theatrical performances, movie screenings and eateries.
