Duke Chapel

Guarded by imposing gates, Durham's Duke Chapel was built in the 1930s as a replica of Canterbury Cathedral in England and is regarded as a Gothic masterpiece. The chapel is an icon of Duke University and it has an incredible array of colorful stained-glass windows depicting various Christian motifs. Also of note is the soaring bell tower, visible from most parts of the university campus.

A great escape from the architectural and cultural attractions of Durham is the delightful Sarah P. Duke Gardens, named after the widow of one of Duke University's founders. The gardens form a retreat at the heart of the university's West Campus and feature 55 acres / 22 hectares of gardens and parklands. Sip a refreshing drink at the Terrace Café, explore the tranquil Japanese Garden or jog some of the 5 miles / 8 km of paths here.
