Santa Fe has provided its own unique style of accommodation for around 400 years, with plenty of hotels throughout the area. Hotels in Santa Fe vary greatly in price and lodging rates tend to be at their most expensive in the central Plaza area, within walking distance of the city's main attractions. Accommodation rates peak in July and August, becoming noticeably cheaper during the low season, from November through April, excluding the Christmas and Thanksgiving periods.

One of the most popular ski resorts in New Mexico, nearby 'Ski Santa Fe' has superb facilities for most winter sports, including skiing and snowboarding, and features many hotels, which often boast breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.


Where to Stay

Where to stay in Santa Fe depends very much on your travel plans and more specifically your budget, with numerous hotels being situated throughout the city and around the outskirts. A number of lavish and extravagant hotels are based around the central Santa Fe Plaza, close to the main attractions, such as the Palace of the Governors and St. Francis Cathedral. Many more reasonably priced hotels can be found throughout Greater Santa Fe and the outlying suburbs.

To the north of Santa Fe, the scenic hills and Sangre de Cristo Mountains provide a stunning backdrop to lodges, guest houses and bed and breakfasts. Major towns and cities close to Santa Fe offer a wide range of hotels and excellent attractions, such as Albuquerque (63 miles / 101 km), Chimayo (28 miles / 45 km), El Rancho (20 miles / 32 km), Espanola (26 miles / 42 km), Rio Rancho (58 miles / 93 km) and Taos (70 miles / 113 km). All of these outlying destinations are within easy driving distance, with the journey to Albuquerque lasting less than 90 minutes.

If you are looking for budget hotels in Santa Fe, then Cerrillos Road is the place to head, being lined with innumerable independent motels and chain accommodation. Especially cheap is the two-star Travelodge Plaza Cerrillos, which is approximately 20 miles / 32 km from the nearest ski resorts. Also located on Cerrillos Road is the Sage Inn, where one-star lodging is within close proximity to the Orlando Fernandez Park and just a short distance from the New Mexico State Capitol (the Roundhouse).

Both Gregg Avenue and the Old Pecos Trail are known for their budget lodging opportunities. The nearby Santa Fe Municipal Airport (SAF) also offers a number of surrounding cheap hotels, which are just off Airport Road and a short drive from the Santa Fe Municipal Golf Course. Further inexpensive hotels reside on the southern side of nearby Cerrillos (28 miles / 45 km), although the quality here can vary considerably.

Mid-range hotels can be found around Artist Road, Avenidas De Las Americas, East Palace Avenue, Greg Avenue and the Old Santa Fe Trail. Notable mid-range accommodation options include the Hotel Plaza Real on Washington Avenue, which stands within the very heart of Old Santa Fe and is known for its balcony views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Located on South Guadalupe Street, the Hacienda Hotel comes with spa facilities and lies within the Guadalupe Railyard District, just a matter of blocks from the Santa Fe Plaza, the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and the city's Convention Center.

Those in search of luxury hotels in Santa Fe will find the Encantado An Auberge Resort on State Road 592 especially plush, boasting five-star lodging and sited within the trendy suburb of Tesuque, next to the National Santa Fe Forest and at the very base of the famous Sangre de Cristo Mountains. A little cheaper and still highly recommended is the centrally located Inn and Spa at Loretto, on the Old Santa Fe Trail, where museums, galleries, restaurants and shops are all just a stroll away. The Inn and Spa at Loretto is especially famous for its traditional Pueblo-style architecture and opulent accommodation, and has recently been renovated at the cost of more than $7 million.
