The variety and quality of the museums and art galleries in Santa Fe is superb, with many of the best offering free admission on Friday evenings. Ranging from contemporary art works at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, to historic artifacts at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, the cultural attractions of Santa Fe are a major draw card to tourists and enjoy healthy visitor numbers.

The state-managed Museum of International Folk Art is one to look out for in Santa Fe and was established as long ago as 1953. Over the years, this renowned institution has grown greatly and is today home to around 150,000 artifacts of varying importance, being spread around the Bartlett Wing, the Griard Wing, the Hispanic Heritage Wing and the Neutrogena Collection.


Georgia O'Keeffe Museum

This museum showcases the works and life of the legendary modernist landscape artist, Georgia O'Keeffe, who was active in the New Mexico area during the first half of the 20th century. Throughout the year, the museum also hosts temporary exhibits of contemporary painters, together with works by O'Keeffe, ensuring that there are always some surprising, masterful art works on display at all times.

Museum of Indian Arts and Culture

Taking you back in time to the centuries before the arrival of the Spanish, the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture has a priceless collection of ancient Native American arts and crafts including ceramics, leather work, textiles, silverware and carvings. The exhibits feature the works of three Native American tribes, the Pueblos, Navajos and the Apaches. There are also plenty of interactive displays at this Santa Fe museum, which take you through the entire history of the New Mexican Indians, from the past up to the present.

The New Mexico Museum of Art dates back almost 100 years and is dedicated to promoting artists in the American Southwest, with art works in various mediums. Neighboring attractions include the Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Santa Fe Plaza, the Palace of the Governors and Cathedral Park.

One of the highlights of Santa Fe's thriving cultural scene, the Museum of International Folk Art is a unique attraction with a stunning array of interesting folk art. This building is divided into two sections, the Hispanic Heritage Wing and the Neutrogena Wing. The former focuses in particular on religious art work from the Spanish colonial era including extensive collections of bultos and retablos, while the latter contains an arrangement of all kinds of folk objects from around the world, grouped loosely by type rather than by origin or period.

Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA)

The Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) was founded in 1971 and has evolved considerably since its early days. Housed in a huge modern adobe building, the Santa Fe Museum of Spanish Colonial Art has an enormous collection of all kinds of art works and crafts from the 1500s up to the present, with an emphasis on the years the region was occupied by the Spanish. Hispanic art works are also displayed and together with the adjoining Museum of New Mexico, all aspects of modern New Mexican history are tastefully covered.
