Getting Around, Concord Travel, Transport and Car Rental

(Concord, New Hampshire - NH, USA)

If you are planning to stay in Concord for more than a couple of days, then it may make a lot of sense to choose a hire car over public transport, particularly if you are planning to travel out and about and explore the southern portion of New Hampshire.

Various prominent roads radiate outwards from downtown Concord and provide good transport connections to neighboring towns and cities. The I-89, I-93, I-393 and Highway US-202 offer an easy way to travel to popular destinations such as nearby Boscawen, Contoocook, Franklin Tilton, Grantham, Hooksett, Litchfield, Manchester, Nashua, Raymond, Sanbornton and Sunapee. However, if you rent a car in the winter, you should note that the roads can be very icy between December and March.

Long-distance coaches are available at the Concord Transportation Center, which is located on Stickney Avenue, just off I-93 (junction 14). These coaches provide an affordable way to travel between Londonderry (south), Manchester (south), Nashua (south), Salem (southeast) and Logan Airport in Boston (southeast).

Airports / Arriving by Air

Although the city is home to the very small public-use Concord Municipal Airport (CON), there are no longer scheduled airline services in operation here. Therefore, if you are looking to fly in or out of the New Hampshire capital, you will need to consider your options carefully. Boston's international airport is by far the biggest and offers good transport connections to Concord. It is possible to travel between downtown Concord and Boston in roughly an hour and 30 minutes, by taking the I-93.

Car Rental

Getting around with a hire car is made all the more easy by the presence of a number of busy highways, such as Interstate I-93 (Styles Bridges Highway / Frederick E. Everett Turnpike), which heads north to Boscawen, Tilton, Sanbornton and New Hampton. The I-93 also runs roughly in a south-southeasterly direction, connecting nearby Manchester and then Derry, Methuen, Lawrence and Wilmington, continuing all the way to Boston, MA.

Of note, a useful park and ride facility is available at 139 Iron Works Road, which is located on the southwestern side of Concord, just off Interstate I-89 (junction 2).

Public transport in the form of buses offers travelers fixed routes around the city from Monday to Friday, between the hours of 06:00 and 18:30. These buses are operated by Concord Area Transit (CAT) - tel: +1 603 225 1989, and connect destinations such as the Concord Hospital, the New Hampshire State House, the New Hampshire Prison Complex, Oakbridge and the southern suburb of Penacook.

Another bus route travels between the downtown district and the Heights neighborhood, stopping at Eagle Square, the Everett Arena, Havenwood, Steeplegate and Walmart. The Crosstown routes link destinations such as Industrial Park Drive, Eagles Bluff, Market Basket, the New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI), Horseshoe Pond, District Court, South Fruit Street and Eagle Square.

Long-distance bus transport is provided by Concord Trailways - tel: +1 800 639 3317 and Concord Coach Lines (tel: +1 603 228 3300), with buses running to and from Boston each day. This journey takes a little more than one hour and 30 minutes. Greyhound bus transport is also on hand for journeys outside of the city and further afield, outside of New Hampshire state.

Taxi transport is most useful for short journeys, when you don't have the time to find the nearest bus stop and wait for the next bus to arrive. Several large cab companies travel around Concord and are usually only a matter of minutes away by phone. Additional surcharges may be applicable if you are using a taxi cab late at night, or on a public holiday.
