New Hampshire's capital city of Concord is also Merrimack County's seat and has a population of approximately 45,000 people. The easterly edge of the city's downtown district is bounded by the Merrimack River and this part of Concord is home to a number of riverside attractions, such as the West Terrill Park and the Douglas N. Everett Arena, linked by the Loundon Road bridge.

Walking around downtown Concord tends to be a relatively straightforward thing to do, since this is a rather compact area, dominated by the New Hampshire State House and other prominent city sights. The Capitol Shopping Center resides on the eastern side of the city center and is often extremely busy at weekends.
