Mississippi's state capitol building, in downtown Jackson, is a close match to that of the capitol in Washington DC - in the Beaux Arts style - and it comes with much history. Tours of the building are popular and are even free on weekdays.

Eudora Welty House and Garden

Eudora Welty (1909-2001), Pulitzer Prize winner and one of Mississippi's most famous writers / photographers, lived in Jackson's historic Belhaven neighborhood together with her mother, where they built a spectacular garden. The house itself, a two-story Tudor-style home, is on the National Register of Historic Places, while the garden is colorful beyond words and comes with camellias, roses, hyacinths, and many other beautiful species.

Admission: charge, discounts available for children and students, children six years old and under are free, admission free each month on the 13th (when the 13th falls between Tuesday and Friday)

Jackson Zoological Park

The Jackson Zoo has been open for more than 80 years and has always boasted a magnificent collection of animals from all four corners of the globe, including a pack of prairie dogs. One of the best attractions at Jackson Zoo is the fantastic Coral Reef Exhibit, which comes with three separate tanks and many different species, while a beautiful hand-painted mural surrounds the set-up. Also on site is the brilliant Discovery Zoo, a children's adventure world, with excellent hands-on exhibits that include the Turtle Crawl and Ant World.

LeFleur's Bluff State Park

Located just outside Jackson, the large LeFleur's Bluff State Park is a superb area to visit if you have an active family that enjoys the outdoors. The park largely consists of woodland and you can enjoy many activities here, including hiking, fishing, golfing, swimming and tennis. Other attractions at the park include playgrounds and picnicking facilities, while boats can be hired for a spin on the lake.
