Saint Paul Weather, When to Go and Climate Information

(Saint Paul, Minnesota - MN, USA)

The humid continental climate experienced by the famous Twin Cities of Minnesota is one of cold winters and reliably hot summers. Sunny summer weather sees temperatures in St. Paul soar to more than 29°C / 84°F or 30°C / 86°F, or even higher, in July and August.

Frequently described as being continental in character, the climate of St. Paul is very much influenced by the state's location in the Upper Midwest, which provides the state capital with quite a variety of extremes, such as heat waves, thunderstorms and even the odd tornado. Lake Superior, roughly 150 miles / 241 km to the northeast, adds a maritime feel to the weather at times, although doesn't manage to stabilize the extremes.

Each one of the seasons in St. Paul is quite distinctive, particularly the winter months. December, January and February can all feel bitterly cold, with constant frosty weather by day and night, meaning that any visitors at this time of the year should bring warm clothing and a good coat. Temperatures often feel even colder when a winter breeze is in the air, adding a wind-chill factor.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

April is the month when the springtime climate really begins to make itself apparent in St. Paul and the daytime temperatures quickly start to rise, almost day by day, soon exceeding 20°C / 68°F in May and 25°C / 77°F in June.

As well as being the hottest time of the year, the summers also tend to be the wettest months, when precipitation levels average approximately 3 inches / 7.6 cm to 4 inches / 10.2 cm per month. Much of the rain comes in the form of periodic heavy showers, meaning that a day of sightseeing is not usually ruined, it may just have a damp interlude.

Most people sensibly avoid the winter months when visiting the Twin Cities, favoring anytime between May and October. However, during extremes of weather, it is worth noting that both St. Paul and nearby Minneapolis boast fairly extensive skyway systems, meaning that you are able to escape from the worst of the elements.
