Capital of the state of Maine, Augusta is also Kennebec County's official seat and is a surprisingly small and compact city, with its population being in the region of a mere 20,000 residents. Interestingly, this city stands amongst the smallest capitals in the United States and is far from being a tourism hotspot, although it does have some interesting sights that reliably draw a steady stream of tourists to its downtown district.

Historically, the Kennebec River has played an important part in both the development and the shaping of this city, from its earliest days as a trading post to its current capital city status.
