Montgomery Art Galleries

(Montgomery, Alabama - AL, USA)

The city's rich visual arts scene is overseen by the 'Alabama State Council on the Arts' and Montgomery manages to boast both a renowned art museum and a number of popular retail galleries.

Suiting art lovers visiting the city, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts resides on the eastern side of the city, being found just off Woodmere Boulevard and most easily reached by taking Interstate I-85 (exit 6). This gallery enjoys an especially tranquil and scenic setting, since it is located within the Wynton M. Blount Cultural Park.

One of the most interesting and unusual artists ever to emerge from Alabama's capital city was Bill Traylor (1854 to 1949), a former slave and self-taught artist. Traylor moved here at the ripe old age of 85 years and began sitting on the sidewalk, where he sketched more than 1,000 images of both passing people and scenes from his past. His simplistic modernist drawings tend to feature bold flat colors and now hold pride of place in art museums in Atlanta and New York, and right here in his beloved Montgomery.
