Niagara on the Lake Museums

(Niagara on the Lake, Ontario - ON, Canada)

Picture of tourists arriving at the ApothecaryThe museum scene at Niagara on the Lake is rather undeveloped considering the high visitors levels, with the local Historical Museum on Castlereagh Street being the main option most likely to draw you in. Actually Niagara on the Lake's oldest serving museum, the Historical Museum dates back more than 100 years, first opening its doors to visitors in 1907 and remaining open ever since.

Step inside and you will discover an extensive collection of items and artefacts relating to the town's history, from the early part of the 20th century onwards. Highlights at the Historical Museum include Native Indian relics, memorabilia relating to the important local Laura Second family, and even some War of 1812 collectibles.

General Information

Another museum of note is the town's highly regarded Apothecary. Located on the corner of Queen Street and King Street, the Apothecary dates back to 1866 and now serves as a rather interesting museum, offering a taste of how a local pharmacy would have appeared some 150 years ago, coming complete with historic walnut cabinets, remedies and various labelled porcelain jars of tonics and drugs.

Alternatively, if you have a spare day, then check out the museums at nearby cities of Buffalo and Niagara Falls, which include the Albright Knox Art Gallery and the World of Records Museum respectively.
