There is an awful lot to see and do in Puerto Rico's vibrant capital. San Juan and its surrounding suburbs, such as Bayamon, have done a wonderful job preserving the Spanish heritage. Tourism is a major part of the economy here, and so visitors will find plenty of tourist attractions, entertainment, golf courses, parks and dining options throughout the city.

The cobblestone streets of Old San Juan are the highlight, but New San Juan's neighbourhoods of Miramar, Santurce and Bayamon have their interesting residential attractions as well. There are even public beaches around Bayamon, where tourists can relax on the sand or partake in some fun water sports.

Science Park (Luis a Ferré Parque de Ciencias)

Bayamon's main tourist attraction is the vast Luis a Ferré Parque de Ciencias, an expansive science park covering over 40 acres / 16 hectares and known for its slightly scientific and educational edge. The Aerospace Museum, with its collection of NASA rockets and aviation gear, is a real highlight. Other facilities include an art gallery, a planetarium, and museums concentrating on themes such as transportation, electrical energy and physics. There is even a zoo with some friendly creatures, while families may also like to hire a pedalo boat and take a trip around the large artificial lake. The best thing to do, however, is to ascend the observation tower and enjoy the stunning views over San Juan.

Golf Courses

Nearly all of Puerto Rico's best golf courses are in the vicinity of San Juan and Bayamon. Topping the list are the famed Dorado courses, just 45 minutes west of the city at the Dorado Beach Resort. Less than an hour to the east are the world-class links of the Wyndham Rio Mar Beach Resort and the Trump International Golf Club. The Fort Buchanon Golf Club is the closest course to Bayamon and may be relatively modest when compared to the resort offerings, but has everything needed for a great round of golf. The Rio Bayamon Golf Course is a nine-hole municipal course and suits those looking for cheap green fees.

Camarero Racetrack

Puerto Rico's only horse racing facility is located just 20 minutes east of Bayamon, at the Camarero Racetrack. The year-round races attract highly-rated thoroughbreds and jockeys, making for a very good spectacle. Races are held on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 15:00. The facilities are excellent, with a restaurant offering fine dining, as well as an onsite sports pub with a definite horse racing atmosphere.

Central Park (Parque Central)

Located just across from the City Hall, the Parque Central de Bayamon is an urban oasis offering tranquility in the heart of the city, with pathways and benches shaded by exotic foliage. The park is known for its beautiful landscaping and country house, which remains well preserved and adds much character to the surroundings. A train runs around the edge of Central Park, providing a taster of the exciting sugarcane railway days.
