Cuba's climate is classified as tropical, although its latitudinal position and its long, narrow mountainous topography give it a subtropical feel, due to the cooling influence of the trade and marine winds. Temperature variations during the Trinidad year are comparatively slight, ranging from a high of 32°C / 90°F to 33°C / 91°F in the height of summer, with humidity raining the heat index to around 25°C / 77°F or 26°C / 79°F in January.

Night-time temperatures average 10°C lower than in the day, and those visiting in winter may need a warm sweater for evening wear. Some rainy weather occurs daily, and varies from regular downpours in the summer months to showers in the winter season. Due to Cuba's position at the mouth of the Bay of Mexico, the island is in line for hurricanes. These mostly occur during September and October, with Caribbean coastal towns such as Trinidad bearing the brunt of the storms.

Cuba's sunshine average is around seven hours per day and cooling trade winds blow year-round, directly affecting the climate. Due to the presence of the nearby Gulf Stream, sea temperatures range from around 26°C / 79°F from November to March, to 29°C / 84°F in May to October. If a beach and water sports holiday is on the agenda, a visit to Trinidad almost all year round, avoiding only the hurricane season, will be a great experience.

For those who are planning to explore the wilder parts of the island, it may be best to avoid the height of the wet season in summer, as already poor country roads may become impassable. April and May have pleasantly hot weather, low rainfall, low humidity, no hurricanes and, oddly, constitute the 'low season' for tourism in Cuba. Therefore, prices are lower and availability is higher, making this a great time to come.
