Trinidad Beaches and Water Sports
(Trinidad, Sancti Spiritus, Cuba)
The beautiful white-sand beaches along the Ancon Peninsula are one of Trinidad's major tourist draws, with Ancon Beach (the Playa Ancon) probably the best known, boasting newly built resorts and water sports facilities. Beaches near the less touristy and more traditional La Boca fishing village are just a short trip from town and much quieter.
La Boca, set on the coast just a few kilometres from Trinidad's centre, is a typically Cuban fishing village which seems frozen in time and undiscovered by the tentacles of organised tourism. Private homes offer especially cheap accommodation in La Boca, often being just a short walk from the beach attractions.
General Information
Many holiday makers choose to visit the Playa Ancon, cycling to the beach via the seaside village of La Boca. Once at the Playa Ancon, day trippers will be greeted by a beautiful white-sandy beach, which many say to be the finest on the southern shoreline of
Cuba. Ancon lies just 12 km / 7 miles to the south of Trinidad and comes with three resort hotels, together with a busy marina, where regular boat trips connect the outlying coral keys.
Deep-sea fishing is available at Ancon Beach and many tourists arrive from Trinidad hoping to catch some large swordfish, sailfish, marlin, wahoo, tarpon and barracuda, although many of these species are quite seasonal. Most deep-sea fishing trips last around four hours and are readily available at the Marina Trinidad.
Nearby, the charming and historic fishing port of Casilda is a mere 6 km / 4 miles to the south of Trinidad and is known for its annual Fiesta de Santa Elena each August.
Some 25 km / 16 miles to the south-east of the Playa Ancon is Cayo Blanco, which has become known for its wealth of dive sites and subsequent scuba diving opportunities. Diving, snorkelling and beach tours around Cayo Blanco can be arranged at the marina, while close to hand, the equally appealing Cayo Macho may also be of interest.
