Vinales Museums and Art Galleries

(Vinales, Pinar del Rio, Cuba)

There's only one museum as such in Vinales, but it offers the best look at the history and heroes who made the Vinales Valley what it is today. There is also a small art gallery standing adjacent to the Casa de la Cultura that organises cultural events and showcases local artists.

With the abundance of natural beauty and rural life surrounding Vinales, it is only a matter of time before this little town emerges as a true artist haven, replete with more galleries and shops. At present, though, most come here for the scenery and hiking, rather than the culture.

Once the home of Captain Adela Azcuy (1861 to 1914), a woman folk heroine who fought for Cuban independence, this small but interesting museum contains a collection of furniture from this era, as well as information relating to the history of the area. The Museo Municipal Adela Azcuy is situated part-way down the Calle Salvador Cisneros, the town's principal thoroughfare, and is therefore easy to locate. Guides are on hand, who can speak both English and Spanish, to narrate the story of Vinales and Adela Azcuy. To get a feel of the valley's past, this place is definitely worth a visit. Of interest, several different hikes depart from this spot on a daily basis.
