Baracoa Hotels and Accommodation

Baracoa doesn't exactly have an old town as such - it is the old town, with not a tall building in sight, although the central area has the most attractive colonial buildings. The city's two- and three-star hotels resemble Spanish haciendas and are proud of their elegant arched balconies, cool lounges, swimming pools and more than ample accommodation.

Guest houses and bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) are scattered around the inner parts of Baracoa, and several picturesque hotels are located along the beach. Many householders here are happy to rent rooms to visitors, but should register with the local authority before they do so.

Where to Stay

Baracoa's lodging and accommodation options all have a welcoming family feel about them. Tourism is relatively new here, and its hard commercial edge hasn't yet hit home. 'Casas particulares' are a favourite style of lodging here - prettily-furnished cabins with small patios lined with potted palms and featuring outdoor seating.

Most accommodation in Baracoa has views of the famous Anvil flat-topped mountain, often seen with its head buried in the clouds, and a number of casas particulares lie along the coastal road, fronting the pristine beaches of Honey Bay.

Almost all of Baracoa's hotels are recently opened, mainly during the last ten years, and provide charming traditionally designed facades and comfortable accommodation. One of the most attractive is the Hotel Castillo in the city centre, rated as three-star but resembling four-star lodging, and boasting a large outdoor pool, air-conditioned rooms and a restaurant serving both local and international cuisine.

Another good choice in Baracoa is the Hotel Porto Santo, (the original name of the city), set on the head of the bay amongst forested hills and also offering a large pool, air-conditioned accommodation and a choice of cuisine. Another smaller city centre option is the Hotel Encanto la Rusa, on Malecon Avenue, and the charming Villa Maguana has four cottages set right on the beach 20 km / 12 miles from the city centre. Casa de Alfredo is a casa particulare located close to the beach, with cool tiled floors and pretty furnishings.
