Baracoa Beaches and Water Sports

(Baracoa, Guantánamo, Cuba)

Baracoa's beaches, set along Honey Bay (the Bahia de Miel) are, quite simply, superb, due to the lack of hordes of tourists and the apparatus which goes with this invasion. Honey Bay is deep and comparatively narrow, with palm-fringed beaches all along its shores. Many have little rivers flowing through them, emptying into the azure sea.

Just 20 km / 12 miles from Baracoa is the Playa Maguana, a stunning white sandy beach regarded by many as the best in the region. Coconut palms fringe the sand, and the sea is an unbelievable rich blue. A charming hotel completes the perfect picture.

The Playa Maguana is a good place to come for snorkelling, with boats often being available for hire along the beachfront. A bar and restaurant are also situated here, amidst the lush vegetation.

General Information

Located on the south-eastern side of Baracoa, past the baseball stadium and the Fuerte Matachin fortress, is the Playa Blanco, a charming idyllic sandy beach which is ideal for picnics, recreation and sunbathing.

Heading out of Baracoa in a north-westerly direction, along the road to Moa, is the Playa Duaba, which is only 2 km / 1.5 miles past the airport and the Hotel Porto Santo. This appealing beach makes for a popular cycle excursion and is made up of black sand. Sited at the mouth of the river, the Playa Duaba is based right where the Second War of Independence began in 1895, and today a memorial marks this important spot.

On the western side of Baracoa and lying next to the river is the Playa Nibujon, an undeveloped beach with little in the way of facilities. It is the natural charm and mountainous backdrop that prove to be the main draw here, and many locals favour this beach.
