Puerto Limon Art Galleries

Contemporary art is flourishing in Costa Rica, with many local artists contributing to current trends in design as well as art. There are a number of shops selling paintings and prints around Puerto Limon, although for art museums and official galleries, it is best to journey to the city of San Jose, which can be reached in under three hours and has much to offer art lovers.

Amongst the best of the galleries in San Jose is the Museum of Costa Rican Art (Museo de Arte Costarricense - El MAC) and the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (Museo de Arte y Diseno Contemporáneo), both of which have plenty to fill an afternoon.

This stunning Art Deco building was once the terminal of San Jose's old airport and now displays over 3,000 of the last two centuries' national treasures. A sculpture garden is found behind the main museum and travelling exhibitions are shown in two side buildings. Expect a huge collection of paintings, along with some photographs, sketches, sculptures and various carvings. A series of art-related events are staged within the Gold Room (El Salon Dorado), as well as some seasonal concerts, and so do check to see if there is anything going on that may interest you during your visit.

Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (Museo de Arte y Diseno Contemporáneo)

The Museum of Contemporary Art and Design comes with a spectacular maze of galleries, theatres and libraries representing trends in Costa Rican and Central American art, design and theatre, all set in an old distillery. This complex is a must-see on a day out in San Jose and was established in 1994, often being referred to as simply the MADC.
