Being located on an upper plain, the temperate climate of Curitiba is noticeably cooler than resorts lying on the Atlantic coast of Paraná. The summer weather (December to February) is reliably hot, with daytime temperatures regularly topping 26°C / 79°F and even rising to 30°C / 86°F or more on occasion.

Whilst the winter climate (June to August) in Curitiba is definitely cooler, temperatures are still pleasant and very respectable, averaging anywhere between 18°C / 64°F to 20°C / 68°F. Every few decades, weather extremes have seen the brief occurrence of snow, although this is highly unusual.

The climate of Curitiba is categorised as being 'sub-tropical highland' or 'maritime temperate', and is greatly influenced by the city's high altitude, being some 935 metres / 3,067 feet above sea level. In fact, out of all the Brazilian capitals, Curitiba actually ranks as the coldest.

Weather extremes should be expected at any times of the year, and heat waves are by no means unheard of. Rainfall is fairly even month by month, with December and January tending to be the wettest months, with each seeing approximately 15 cm / 6 inches of rainfall. At the other end of the scale, June is the driest month and experiences just 8 cm / 3 inches of rain.
