Curitiba Events, Things to Do and Festivals 2014 / 2015

(Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil)

There are many things to do and enjoy throughout the year in Curitiba, although several festivals in particular do stand out on the annual calendar. As with the rest of Brazil, events in Curitiba are often of a religious nature and locals tend to celebrate Easter (March / April) and Corpus Christi (late May / early June) with much merriment.

The annual carnival celebrations of Curitiba take place in February and March, and although they hardly rival those of Rio de Janeiro, there is plenty to enjoy. Most of the region's main carnival events and processions are staged around the beaches of nearby Paranagua, which is approximately a 90-minute drive away.

Well worth looking out for is the Oficina de Música (Music Workshop), where a series of classical, folk, jazz, pop and rock concerts take place. The Oficina de Música has grown to become one of Brazil's most significant music festivals and is held during January.

Another event very much of note is the annual Festival de Teatro de Curitiba (Theatre Festival), which is staged each year in March and lasts around ten days. Many theatre groups, both Brazilian and international, arrive in the city to perform their plays, attracting more than 100,000 people over the course of the festival.

If you are sporty, then you may like to consider taking part in the Maratona Ecológica Internacional de Curitiba (International Ecological Marathon) in November, which is widely known for its steep inclines and gruelling hot weather conditions.
