Lausanne Weather, When to Go and Climate Information

Switzerland's ever popular city of Lausanne enjoys an especially mild climate, with much of its weather being directly influenced by its proximity to nearby Lake Geneva. Other important geographical features surrounding Lausanne and directly determining the climate include the southerly Swiss plateau, and the city's elevated position of some 500 metres / 1,640 feet above the port of Ouchy's shoreline.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

Warm and somewhat humid winds often arrive from the Atlantic, along with breezes from Lake Geneva, freshening the air in Lausanne and cooling down temperatures during the hot summer months. The climate in Lausanne is at its hottest between July and August, when temperatures average 25°C / 77°F by day and drop to around 14°C / 57°F at night. As a result, many restaurants and bars stay open until late, to make the most of the mild nights and longer daylight hours.


Lausanne's southerly exposure to the lake has resulted in a particularly verdant and appealing city, with a definite Mediterranean feel. The inviting summer climate is when many tourists choose to visit Lausanne, since the surrounding natural attractions are at there best. Pleasure and passenger boats from Ouchy become busy in the summer, and the nearby beach of Vidy is a definite highlight at this time of the year.

Autumnal weather arrives in September and by the beginning of October, daytime temperatures have dropped to 17°C / 63°F or lower. However, the climate can feel distinctly cooler when the famous local Föhn winds arrive and add a definite wind-chill factor. The autumn skies of Lausanne are also known for being blue, clear and completely free of clouds.
