The Spanish city of Bilbao is located within the north-westerly autonomous community of the Basque Country, where it stands alongside the Nervión River. Bilbao is part of the metropolitan area named the Comarca of Greater Bilbao, which ranks amongst Spain's largest and comes with a population of approximately 900,000 people.

Close to the Bay of Biscay, the city enjoys a scenic backdrop comprised of two separate mountain ranges. The historic Old Quarter is known to the locals as the 'Casco Viejo' and stands on the eastern side of the Nervión River, which also goes by the name of the Estuary of Bilbao. Accommodation and fining options are in good supply around Las Siete Calles, with the principal attractions being based within the newer part of the quarter, being within comfortable strolling distance of the Nervión.

Being a sizeable city, maps of Bilbao certainly come recommended, particularly if you have your sights set on driving around the Basque Country. If you prefer to use public transport, you will find the bus station located on the western side of central Bilbao, while the railway station is situated in the El Ensanche area, close to the Puente de Arenal.
