The Riverwalk / Promenade
If you go to Bilbao there is a very good chance that you will find the Riverwalk, whether or not I tell you about it. If is a free attraction and perhaps one of the very best riverfront promenades there is. It is not commercialised in anyway, which I found to be extremely refreshing. There were plenty of seats along the route, so if you want to stop off and have a sit down while you admire the glorious views, well, you can. I was also struck by how nice and clean it was. Some people were walking, others cycling and some were rollerskating. There were also lots of bridges spanning the Bilbao River, linking squares such as the Plaza Ernesto Erkoreka.

Great views of Bilbao on the Funicular Railway
The Funicular Railway has a square all of its own (Plaza de Funicular) and is off the Castanos Street. This mountain railway will take you up the steep side of Mount Artxanda. Although the journey itself is quite short, the views are lovely and it is quite cheap. At the top were some restaurants and shops. I enjoyed looking down at the Guggenheim Museum and the other obvious landmarks scattered around the city and the old town. We even saw as far as the airport.
