Home to a number of popular art galleries and museums, Bilbao will not disappoint those looking for historical works of art. Bilbao has a rich heritage of culture and arts and the Museum of Fine Arts (Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao) and the striking Guggenheim Museum are without doubt two of the city's premier art galleries, both containing a wealth of exhibits.

Also not to be missed are Bilbao's Museum of Reproductions (Museo de Reproducciones Artisticas), the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art (Museo Diocesano de Arte Sacro), and the exhibits at the CMD Palacio Yohn.


Museo Guggenheim (Guggenheim Museum)

Famous for its striking titanium-clad curved architecture and stunning glass interior, the world-class Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao has much to offer. Ranging from large permanent collections of modern paintings and sculptures, to many unusual and appealing year-round temporary displays, the Guggenheim Museum stands in the heart of Bilbao and opened in 1997.

CMD Palacio Yohn

Standing in the Casco Viejo area of Bilbao, in the Old Quarter, the CMD Palacio Yohn is an important, historical building which is home to an impressive collection of art works. Highlights here include a number of pieces by a several notable artists and societies, including the Association of Basque Watercolour Artists. Photographs and sculptures are also exhibited here.

Museo de Bellas Artes (Museum of Fine Arts)

One of Bilbao's premier art galleries, the Museo de Bellas Artes specialises in a range of contemporary works, which include a selection of Gothic paintings. Also on offer at the gallery are a number of seasonal events, which include concerts and film screenings at the museum's cinema.

Museo de Reproducciones Artisticas (Museum of Reproductions)

Dedicated to authentic plaster reconstructions of some of the world's most famous sculptures, the Museo de Reproducciones Artisticas stands in the historic Old Quarter area of Bilbao. With an extensive collection of art works reproducing sculptures from many countries, such as Greece, Egypt and Italy, other attractions at the museum include audiovisual presentations and art classes.

Museo Diocesano de Arte Sacro (Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art)

Built in the early 16th century as the Encarnación Convent, today this historic building houses the impressive Museo Diocesano de Arte Sacro, based around an inner patio area and cloister. With a number of spacious art galleries and impressive paintings on exhibit, many of which date back to the 1300s, this museum first opened its doors in 1995 and has gained a solid reputation. Other attractions here include silver works and religious artefacts.
