Limerick Shopping and Districts

(Limerick, County Limerick, Republic of Ireland)

Image of shops in the city centreLimerick is one of the most important cities in the area, and locals from all over the region come here on shopping errands. Visitors enjoy the weekend stalls at the Milk Market along with leisurely tours of the shops on both Cruises Street and O'Connell Street. Most Limerick shops open at around 09:30 and close between 17:00 and 18:00, and many also open later on Thursdays and Fridays. The majority of local shops are closed on Sundays.

The Euro is the official unit of currency in the Republic of Ireland, and shoppers will find that most major retailers are outfitted to accept credit or debit cards. Merchant stalls in the weekend markets deal in cash, but ATMs are widespread throughout Limerick city centre. Even small towns in the surrounding countryside are likely to have an ATM on hand.

When to Shop and Where

One of the most comprehensive shopping centres in Limerick is the Arthur's Quay Centre.

It features four levels of modern shops and department stores, with a few souvenir-oriented boutiques in the mix. The next-door park is a lovely place for an early morning walk.

Another major shopping centre in Limerick is found on Cruises Street. This is the most accessible shopping venue, laid out on an attractive pedestrian grid that's easy to navigate.

Shoppers who value selection and atmosphere will find plenty of both in this area. Located on Roxborough Road, close to the railway station, the Roxboro Shopping Centre (formerly the Thomond Centre) is a notable mall in central Limerick and comes with a Tesco supermarket branch, together with a number of small stores.

Even if you're not looking to make a purchase, the atmosphere here is worth checking out. If you are in the market for pottery, handicrafts and souvenirs, this is the place to be. Come on Friday afternoons for arts and crafts, or Saturday mornings for locally grown produce.
