Kilkenny Weather, When to Go and Climate Information

(Kilkenny, Republic of Ireland)

Scenic photograph of the River NoreThe overall climate in Kilkenny is oceanic, with wider temperature variations than usually found in the rest of Ireland, although extreme temperatures are rare. Significantly, the city records higher summer and lower winter temperatures, although its climate is still considered as temperate. Highs of 30°C / 86°F are unusual, as are lows of below freezing for any length of time.

As with the rest of Ireland, rainy weather in Kilkenny is consistent and, since 2005, has been on the increase annually, with 2009 the wettest year on record. However, the city's inland sheltered location surrounded by hills ensures that strong winds are the exception rather than the rule.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

Visiting Kilkenny is a satisfying experience year-round, as many attractions both in and city and the county are either indoors or sheltered from the rain and, due to said rain, the countryside is a glorious emerald green during the spring and summertime climate.

Although an umbrella is essential, rainy weather is described by the Irish themselves as 'soft', (an obscure and very 'Irish' description), and the lack of driving winds and freezing temperatures can make it an almost pleasurable experience.
