Day trippers often find themselves heading to the nearby steamy turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon (geothermal spa). One of Iceland's most famous and popular attractions, the Blue Lagoon is situated within a lava field in neighbouring Grindavik, on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

The waters of the Blue Lagoon Spa are rich in a variety of different minerals, such as sulphur and silica. People bathe at the Blue Lagoon to take advantage of the water's reputed medicinal qualities. Average water temperatures are usually around 40°C / 104°F.

The enormous Hallgrimskirkja (Church of Hallgrimur) is the fourth-tallest manmade structure in the whole of Iceland and was designed to resemble the country's distinctive basalt lava flows.

Many tourists do not realise that the church bell tower / spire of the Hallgrimskirkja also doubles up as an observation tower and comes complete with a viewing deck, which can be reached by using a convenient lift / elevator. Expect to find some of the best city and mountain views possible.
