(Debrecen, Hajdu-Bihar, Hungary)

Picture of the Plaza MallIt is hard to visit Debrecen without spending a day or two shopping and exploring the city's many interesting shops. Hungarian handicrafts and delicacies are never hard to come by in Debrecen. Do look out for the butchers and supermarkets, where the famed 'Debrecener sausage' is always available and not to be overlooked.

Local markets are another good place to sample this tasty sausage and also to find a range of inexpensive Hungarian souvenirs, although the quality is not always constant, so do inspect items thoroughly before you try your hand at haggling.

Where to Shop

Many shops are strewn all around central Debrecen, with a number of antiques shops lining central stretches, such as the Csapó Utca and the Kolcsey Utca, with many further shops close by along the Burgundia Utca and the Rákoczi Utca.

One of the city's biggest shopping centres is the Debrecen Plaza, which enjoys an especially central location and features a huge selection of shops, including boutiques, jewellers and a supermarket, whilst also being home to many restaurants and even a multiplex cinema. Located on the Kálvin Tér, the Udvarház Shopping Centre is another of Debrecen's many unexpected highlights and even features its own hotel.
