Heraklion International Airport, otherwise known as Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport, is Crete's main air hub and the second-busiest in Greece. It covers 21,000 square metres / 226,050 square feet and handles around five million passengers every year.

A wide range of airlines operate at Heraklion International Airport, providing flights to and from the UK, Sweden, France, Germany, Spain, the Czech Republic and a handful of destinations in Greece. Domestic flights to Athens are provided by Olympic Air, Minoan Air and Aegean Airlines. The site is expected to close by 2015 after the construction of a new airport at Kastelli Pediados. The new passenger capacity will be double that of the current facility.

Passengers flying to Crete will be able to make use of a good public transport system, with public buses and taxis readily available. For those visitors who want more freedom, car hire is an ideal way to explore the resorts and villages of the island, with over a dozen reputable firms represented onsite.

Heraklion International Airport is situated 5 km / 3 miles distant from Heraklion, the largest city on Crete. From the facility, drivers can easily connect to Crete's capital and other major cities via the E75 motorway, which leads to Heraklion, Agios, Nikolaos, Reythmno and Sitia.

Car

Car hire is available at Crete's airport, with a selection of companies operating right at the terminal. The E75 takes motorists into the heart of the city in just ten to 15 minutes, or can be used to travel either east or west along the north coast.

Buses

Local blue and green buses leave from the airport frequently, with routes running to resorts in the north of Crete, such as Kissamos and Sitia, as well as towns in the south. Bus services run from early morning to late evening from Monday to Saturday, but are less frequent on Sundays.

Taxis are available on arrival from just outside the terminal building, but can also be pre-booked for a more convenient transfer. Among the cab firms operating at the airport are Heraklion Radio Taxi, Candia Taxi SA and Manolidakis Georgios K.

Ferries

It is a ten-minute taxi ride to Crete's busy port at Heraklion, from where a range of boat and ferry services are available. ANEK Lines, Minoan Lines, Hellenic Seaways and LANE Lines all provide services to various parts of Greece, giving easy access to points of interest.
