The city of York is a very walkable city and this really is the best way to sightsee and find your way around. Located within the county of North Yorkshire and alongside both the River Ouse and the River Foss, York is famed for its rich Viking heritage and Roman history.

The spectacular York Minster marks the very heart of the city and this huge landmark is visible from far away, being surrounded by nothing short of a labyrinth of winding lanes and alleyways. These colourful streets are lined with all kinds of shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs, and in the summer are a very friendly place to hang out, although in July and August can become a little on the crowded side at times.

A very good way to get to know the city and understand its layout is to enjoy a guided bus tour of York. Alternatively, head to the tourist office on the Exhibition Square, pick up a map and take a stroll along the fortified medieval walls, enjoying the elevated views along the way.
