York Art Galleries

(York, North Yorkshire, England, UK)

York Art GalleriesAlthough there are a number of very reasonable art galleries spread around the city, the York City Art Gallery stands out in particular, being located on Exhibition Square and within the Bootham district, close to the Minster. This extremely popular public art gallery is owned and maintained by the York Museums Trust and continues to enjoy high visitor numbers.

Dating as far back as 1892 and located within the Grade-II building originally constructed for the 1879 Yorkshire Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition, the City Art Gallery saw much refurbishment in 2005. Many of the works on exhibit here were created by local York artist William Etty (1787 to 1849), who became famous for his paintings of nudes and was commemorated in the form of a large statue outside the entrance, erected in 1911.

Close to the Micklegate Bar, the Alan Stuttle Art Gallery actively promotes the art work of local up-and-coming Yorkshire artists and other more well-known artists, and is amongst the city's best commercial galleries.
