The city's very own Ostrava Museum is worthy of a look and offers a good insight into times gone by, while the extremely popular Museum of Coal Mining is certainly one attraction not to miss and renowned throughout Europe. Here you will find a host of mining machinery and related equipment, together with underground corridors stretching for some 250 metres / 820 feet.


Museum of Coal Mining (Hornické Muzeum)

Located on the northern side of Ostrava, the Museum of Coal Mining is known locally as the Hornické Muzeum and is to be found within the 19th-century Anselm pit colliery. The museum buildings display an array of exhibits relating to mining from all over North Moravia and it is even possible to descend down an old coalface and shaft.

With exhibitions showcasing a range of regional archaeological exhibits, the Ostrava Museum is also home to plenty of informative natural history displays, along with a number of rather unexpected ancient treasures, such as the priceless statue of the Petrkovická Venus.

The Ostrava Art Museum is home to the best collection of paintings in this part of North Moravia. Expect to see plenty of modernist 20th-century paintings by a number of notable Czech artists, along with various visiting exhibitions.
