Rijeka Hotels and Accommodation

(Rijeka, Primorje Gorski Kotar, Kvarner, Croatia)

Visitor accommodation in Rijeka is plentiful and geared to business travellers, as well as to holiday makers and those transiting around the region. Most hotels are situated a few blocks back from the massive port, which extends along almost all of the city's seafront. It is worth noting that demand increases during the famous Rijeka Carnival season (late January onwards), along with room rates.

Just outside the city boundaries and along the bay is the famous resort destination of Opatija, home to a further selection of accommodation at all levels. In addition, all around this almost totally enclosed bay and close to Rijeka are other smaller towns with good lodging options.

Where to Stay

Lodging in Rijeka varies from luxury hotels in cultural monuments and totally modern semi-high rise constructions with excellent facilities, to business hotels, guest houses and B&Bs (bed and breakfasts). Accommodation options are available to suit all pockets and lengths of stay, and the majority can be booked in advance online. For those who prefer rural accommodation, the hills behind the city hold several small towns and popular resort hotels.

A number of upscale hotels in Rijeka have been converted from majestic former mansions, the most famous being the Continental Hotel, a state-protected cultural monument dating back to the late 1880s and set in beautiful grounds, in the heart of the city. Here there is luxury accommodation and facilities for every type of visitor, including a tempting spa and relaxation centre.

Another top-drawer city centre hotel is the Grand Hotel Bonavia, set right on the harbour in the business district, 8 km / 5 miles from the Opatija Riviera. The Jadran Hotel is another good choice, being just 1 km / 0.5 miles from downtown and boasting stunning balcony views (from almost all of its rooms) across the breathtaking Rijeka Bay.

At the budget end of the lodging list, but only for the reasonable room rent, is the Art Rijeka, a seasonal guest house open from mid-June to mid-September. Charming and cosy, it is convenient for all attractions, restaurants and nightlife. The owners provide guests with useful Rijeka brochures, maps and helpful tips.

For even more budget accommodation, locals here are happy to rent out rooms to tourists, with details easily sourced at almost all travel agencies and tourist centres in the city. This is also a good way to sample Croatian life.
