Can Tho Landmarks and Monuments

(Can Tho, Mekong Delta, Vietnam)

Landmarks and sights in Can Tho are varied and interesting, although it is fair to say that there is nothing quite on the scale of those found in Ho Chi Minh City. Ninh Kieu is the downtown and riverside area, and this is the best place to start a tour. Here you will find the top sights, including that of Ninh Kieu Park on the river.

Further north is the Du Thuyen, a distinctive all-wooden restaurant ship that offers nightly dinner sailings. Can Tho is also home to several pagodas, such as both the Munirangsyaram Pagoda and the Cantonese Congregation Pagoda.

Ninh Kieu

Address: Can Tho, Vietnam, VN
Ninh Kieu forms the centre of Can Tho, where the government offices and many of the landmarks and monuments are based. The district also fronts the Can Tho River where Ninh Kieu Park is located, a top attraction in the area, being a favourite spot for both locals and tourists alike. There are many seafood restaurants over the water here, and this area really is a must-see at night, when it is beautifully illuminated by spotlights.

The Du Thuyen is a restaurant, boat and landmark in the city, and is moored just offshore on the Can Tho River's Ninh Kieu wharf. This attractive all-wooden boat is more like a floating house and comes with three floors, an open-air deck and evening cruises. The Du Thuyen is a must for foodies and makes evening sailings at 20:00, with the combined trip and meal usually lasting around 90 minutes in total, docking at 21:30.

Munirangsyaram Pagoda

Address: 36 DL Hoa Binh, Can Tho, Vietnam, VN
Dating back to the mid-1940s, the Munirangsyaram Pagoda is a little gem in the centre of the city and was built for the local Khmer community. This Khmer Theravada Buddhist pagoda has some fantastic ornamentation and a noticeable lack of Taoist spirit decorations, which are so commonplace in pagodas of the Vietnamese Mahayana style. The two-storey structure has an upstairs sanctuary that comes with an almost life-size Buddha image.

Cantonese Congregation Pagoda

Address: D Hai Ba Trung, Can Tho, Vietnam, VN
Located on the riverfront just to the south of the city centre is this small and perfectly formed Chinese pagoda. Known as the Cantonese Congregation Pagoda - being set up by the Cantonese Congregation several decades previous, today's incarnation is a rebuild. Although not a must-see, the site on the river is the main attraction, being located next to the Central Market.

Ong Temple (Chua Ong)

Address: D Hai Ba Trung, Can Tho, Vietnam, VN
The Ong Temple enjoys an especially scenic setting, overlooking the river banks, and is to be found within the Guangzhou Assembly Hall. Dating back to the latter part of the 19th century, this religious landmark is especially interesting and was constructed as a place where locals could worship Kuang Kung, the Chinese God of War, who symbolises courage, honour, loyalty, wealth and many other attributes. An image of Kuang Kung forms the centrepiece, while other art works depict further Chinese deities, such as the God of Earth, the Goddess of Fortune and the God of Finance.
