Kuantan Shopping and Districts

(Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia)

Shopping in Kuantan is a lively cultural experience, as the city is famed for its traditional products, including batik-printed textiles and fine carvings. However, visitors are not limited to souvenir hunting alone, as Kuantan has several malls and other similar areas.

Shoportunities are found all over the city, with upscale boutiques and craft shops mainly in the centre and the malls. Prices are excellent overall, and a comprehensive shopping trip would cover most areas of Kuantan. If you are comfortable with bargaining, there are great opportunities in the markets and street stalls selling handicrafts and local products.

When to Shop and Where

Best buys are, as always in Malaysia, fashions and high quality traditional products, such as batik-printed silks, DVDs and brassware. The best places to go are the Medan Pelancong on the Jalan Besar, and the Komplex Kraftangan along the Jalan Pintas.

To see the entire weaving process as well as making a purchase, the Pahang Silk Weaving Centre is the place. Night markets are held at various city locations and are fascinating for their choice of local products, as are the fresh markets and the rows of Chinese-style shophouses with their little stores.

For more conventional shopping in Kuantan, the newly-opened East Coast Mall is the largest and most modern in the region, with a vast selection of all that upscale malls are famous for, including Western fast-food outlets.

The Berjaya MegaMall is still a popular place to shop, with its plethora of stalls and small shops, with both the Teruntum Complex and the Kuantan Shopping Parade also offering plenty of choice. The latter hosts mini-concerts and other traditional and modern entertainment. Of note, most shops, markets and malls in Kuantan open around 10:00 and stay open until late.
