Sapporo is located on the north-western side of the Hokkaido Prefecture and is the regional capital. One of Japan's leading tourist destinations, central Sapporo is dominated by a number of modern skyscrapers, the tallest of which include the JR Tower, the Sapporo Tower and also the Sheraton Hotel, proving useful points of reference.

Various bookstores are scattered around the city, a number of which provide English-language newspapers, magazines and also maps of central Sapporo. These can prove invaluable when finding your way around the city.


Maps and Orientation of the City

Central Sapporo is laid out as a structured gridwork pattern and is typically Western in style. Blocks of buildings and wide boulevards span outwards from the TV Tower and the Odori-koen area of green, where Sapporo is split into north and south regions.

On the northern side of Sapporo's Odori-koen strip you will find the JR Sapporo Station, the Paseo Shopping Centre, the campus of Hokkaido University and also the Hokudai Shokubutsuen botanical gardens. To the south, the downtown shopping district and underground plazas are amongst the main highlights in this part of Sapporo.
