Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art

There are several interesting exhibitions at this exciting art museum, including one section that showcases Art Nouveau glasswork at its best. This huge collection of glass handiwork is exceptionally precious and the real highlight of the facility. Also of interest are the works of local regional artists, or of artists with deep-rooted links to Hokkaido. The landscaped garden in which the museum is situated is tastefully landscaped and varied movable al fresco sculptures give the expansive setting a relaxed ambience.

Ishiyama Ryokuchi

Home to dozens of delicate rock carvings, the Ishiyama Ryokuchi area is a remarkable outdoor art gallery which exhibits attractive and unique sculptures. Formerly Sapporo's biggest stone quarry for around a century, the current park has two sections, the north and south blocks. Everything in the park has been designed to fit into this environment including drinking fountains, street lamps and even dustbins. There are nice views from the north block, while the south block is where you will find most of the rock sculptures.

Set in widespread grounds, many sculptures are displayed liberally throughout the Sapporo Art Park, meaning you can enjoy a stroll through nature whilst also having an artistic experience. Studios offer visitors the chance to take part in pottery sculpting, and an on-site souvenir shop gives you the opportunity to pick up some unusual trinkets. The park's garden restaurant is a great place to rest your feet and soak up the relaxed atmosphere amongst the many sculptures and decorations. Located on the gently sloping hills in a Sapporo suburb, this is the ideal museum to visit if you are looking to combine art with a wonderful day out among natural scenery.
