Papua Hotels and Accommodation

Papua is a very appealing part of Indonesia and each year, its hotels regularly fill up with eager holiday makers, keen to explore the tropical jungles and the coastal towns. Between April and September, accommodation in Papua is at its busiest and more expensive, since this dry spell forms the main tourist season.

Hotels in Western Papua are well placed for holiday makers wishing to stay close to some idyllic, deserted beaches, with a number of remote islands also being within reach. The city of Sorong is a very reasonable place to look for accommodation in this westerly region and makes for a good base for scuba diving, hiking and bird watching, with hotels boasting views across the Pacific Ocean and being conveniently close to the Cassowary Beach (Pantai Kasuari).

Where to Stay

Still in Western Papua and close to Sorong, the picturesque resort of Fak Fak features plenty of hotels, which are based along the Jalan Izaak Telussa and include both the Tembagapura and the Hotel Marco Polo, which stands directly opposite a mosque.

Manokwari is another popular resort in Papua and known for its Table Mountain Park (Taman Gunung Meja). Hotels in Manokwari all offer bed and breakfast accommodation, and some even include afternoon tea in their lodging rates.

The Losmen Apose on the Jalan Kota Baru provides good budget accommodation in Manokwari, while if you have a little more money to spend, the quality of lodging greatly improves, with reliable choices including the Hotel Mokwam on the Jalan Merdeka, and the Mutiara Hotel on the Jalan Yos Sudarso. Nearby, the Cenderawasih Bay Marine National park is perfect for day trips, as is the islands of Rumberpon (Pulau Rumberpon).

In Central Papua, hotels are well placed to explore the region. Look for accommodation in the small islands of Biak (Pulau Biak), next to Cenderawasih Bay. Accommodation in Biak is centred around the town of Kota Biak and is usually quite reasonably priced.

No trip to the Indonesian region of Papua can really ever be considered to be complete without paying a visit to the ever-popular Baliem Valley. Wamena is the main town in the Baliem Valley and enjoys its driest weather between March and August. Worth noting, most of the hotels within Wamena don't feature hot water as standard, although staff will usually happily supply a bucket of hot water if you would like to have a bath.

Those wishing to stay in Eastern Papua should consider accommodation in Jayapura and Sentani, the latter of which stands alongside the scenic lakefront of the Danau Sentani and is close to the Sentani Airport (DJJ).
