Semarang Shopping and Districts

(Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia)

Shopping is a major pastime for local Indonesians in Semarang and tourists will find plenty of souvenirs everywhere. Semarang is an interesting city when it comes to shopping, since it offers a mixture of modern, glitzy malls, large department stores, lots of small family run shops, and more traditional Indonesian markets.

For local handicrafts, local delicacies and gift ideas, head to the regular market on the Pasar Johar and check out the antiques. Those shopping for Javanese souvenirs of Semarang should look out for 'batik' (traditional patterned woven cloth), as well as paintings, jewellery and colourful items of clothing.

Where to Shop

The Jalan Pemuda is a prominent thoroughfare in central Semarang and leads towards the roundabout, where it has become a significant shopping street. Located off the Jalan Ahmad Dahlan, the Plaza Simpang Lima shopping complex is another popular place to max out your credit card and has lots of eateries as well, should you wish to take time out and enjoy a coffee and pastry.

The Plaza Simpang Lima is surrounded by malls, shops, supermarkets, cafes, cinemas and department stores, and stands at the very point where the Jalan Gajah Mada, the Jalan Jend A Yani, the Jalan Pahlawan and the Jalan Pandanaran all come together and meet.

Other notable shopping centres in Semarang include the Ciputra Mall, the Java Supermall, the Sri Ratu Mall and the recently opened DP Mall. Self caterers will find the Carrefour hypermarket well stocked with groceries.
