Dosa Masala at 4am
Yes, the people on the street were sometimes difficult, but they are worthwhile to meet. I spent some time at the Madhur Milan Café. It was not really a café like the name suggest, but had mostly the vegetarian food. It is close to the one Dasaswamedh Ghat on that road. It has very good food and the people want to the English there.

The Puja Guesthouse
I don't always like to book my place of stay ahead of time, but I did when visiting Varansi. I met up with a friend at Puja Guesthouse. Decent accommodation for what we were paying with views of the Gange. The only thing is you can't hang out on the roof all of the time because of the monkeys, but the rooms had air-con and 'hot' water for 250 rps.

A Baguette Oasis
We go to the exotic places to learn about the culture, but sometimes we want the familiar. For fresh bakery, go to The Brown Bread Bakery - it is German owned and delicious.

Re. Ladies Beware
Thanks for that. I had something similar happen to me in Bali. I thought he was just a taxi driver, but it got weird quickly when he expected for me to pay for his entrance to the club and the next night he showed up to my hotel room door.

Ladies Beware
Like Nigel said, there is always some trick around every corner. Ladies should be aware of the wanting gigolos. They will follow you around and tell you that they want to practice their English then slowly find a way to work themselves into your life. Just mention a boyfriend or husband or something.

Viewing Pleasure Madness
Varansi is crazy place. One of the biggest tourist traps was the Ganga Aarti Ceremony. Though lovely, the crowds were out of control. I mean, in India life is much harder than you can imagine, so I don't blame the lads, but it is a well-known scam that when hey come up and say they will find you the best seat the requiring money from you when the ceremony is finished. Nothing is free here.
