South Sudan Weather, When to Go and Climate Information

(South Sudan, SS, North-East Africa)

South Sudan has an equatorial climate. Visitors can, therefore, expect to experience plenty of sunshine, as well as hot temperatures and high humidity.

Even if you are not visiting during the rainy season, expect some wet weather on a daily basis. Temperatures remain high throughout the year, so lightweight clothing is recommended.

The hottest months of the year in South Sudan are January and February, in the final few months of the country's dry season. Step out of the plane at Juba International Airport and you can't fail to be affected by the stifling heat that hits you.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

Temperatures in the city itself can reach as high as 38°C / 100°F. Even at night, average temperatures tend not to slip below a balmy 22°C / 72°F. July is usually the coolest month of the year, with arguably the most pleasant climate for European visitors, although it is still rather hot for most holiday makers.

South Sudan's rainy season occurs in the summer, although exactly when this weather arrives tends to vary from one region to another. The west of the country, for example, usually receives the most rainfall, whilst in the south-east, rainfall is considerably lower. On the whole, South Sudan's rainy season runs from April through to October or November. Often, this leads to dramatic flooding, which has a knock-on effect of disrupting transport and travel around the country.
